The nature of drug addiction

Every drug addict who is recovering from drug addiction is a fragile thing. Relapse is never too far away and the addict remains at a high probability of going back to drugs because of a phenomenon called cross-addiction. Cross addiction means that if a person is an alcoholic or addicted to a particular mind-altering drug, he will potentially be addicted to all of the other mood altering drugs.

Addiction happens to be a disease which is frequently described as primary, chronic and a relapsing one. Over the last decade, a lot of research has gone into addiction and it tells us that it is a brain disease. A lot of people who use drugs do not acknowledge it as a disease because they had voluntarily tried the chemical in question. But the changes in the brain that happen over time do not reflect it as a deliberate choice. The neural pathways of the brain are changed due to addiction. These changes in the brain prompt the addict to seek out the drug time and again and compel the individual to abuse drugs even if he knows that the fallout can be disastrous.

The accepted definition of drug addiction is that the individual will compulsively use the drug despite the negative consequences that are attached with it. Brain changes due to addiction are common to all drug addictions and also some other physical experiences like addiction to gambling, compulsive overeating, and even addiction to sex. Also, there are individuals who are “Hard wired” for addiction and this is due to biology and genetic factors that make the individual more susceptible to drugs than other people. They are at the risk of being addicted with the first use of any mood altering drug.

The inherent nature of mood altering drugs make them ideal agents for altering feelings, thoughts, as well as behavior. They will distort reality for the addict and provides them with a very expensive and potentially dangerous escape from reality for the time duration that the drug is in effect. People are addicted to the mood altering effect of the drug and may go on to picking their drug of choice.

Drug addicts have very poor social skills. One of the reasons why they choose drugs is because it will provide them with anxiety relief for some time. Because the addicted individual has poor coping skills, they will seek out the drug time and again and in the process become hopelessly addicted.
