The objectives of practicing Kung Fu

An important reason why the general standards of people practicing Kung Fu are so low today is because they do not have a clear objective in mind.  If you ask someone who has been practicing kungfu for a long time his reasons for doing so, he will have a hard time in coming up with a satisfactory answer.

He might say that the learnt it for self defense, to get in shape or to increase confidence, but is that all of it? The answer is no. A real kungfu practitioner will be able to defend himself from multiple enemies without breaking into a sweat, and will do so with grace and fluidity. Much of that is missing in today’s younger generation. They know little or nothing about kungfu tradition, and they lack the amazing coordination that should be seen in an ideal practitioner.

The reason why this has happened is because he has practiced this form of martial art without a clear set of aims and objectives. If we’re clear in our aims and objectives, then we reach a higher level of attainment as well as reduce extra time spent in practicing.

There are three goals in kungfu training; health and fitness, combat training and development of character. Advanced persons also seek out expansion of the mind and spiritual attainment and fulfillment.

Combat efficiency is the foremost goal in kungfu training, because the term means ‘martial art’ in the West. The second aim is health and fitness. This is more so in our societies today, because fighting and brawls are seldom seen. Hence the need for fitness becomes foremost amongst most trainees.

The important point is that kungfu should be practiced as a martial art. It promotes radiant health and one can see it in the confident stride and stance of its pupils. If kungfu is practiced as per its classical form, it transforms a person from the inside.

Other qualities like endurance, tolerance and perseverance are also developed as secondary attributes of king fu. Techniques like ‘lifting water’, ‘golden bridge’ and ‘small universe’ can be practiced daily for years with benefit. Mental freshness and calmness are also developed if practiced wholeheartedly.

Meditation is a big part of kungfu. Though not emphasized upon in the earlier stages, it gets more and more importance as the levels increase. Though a lot of people are unaware of the fact, the initial aim of kungfu was to inculcate spiritual balance and tranquility.

In order to inculcate the general aims of combat efficiency, objectives are set like developing powerful arms and legs, including agile footwork. This helps set the ground for more advanced training.
