It is a very good idea to have a first aid pack or box at home whether you have children there or not, whether it is just you or more adults. People hurt themselves, have accidents and whether it is something minor or something that then needs hospital attention, having some basic first aid supplies is a big help. The following list is a collection of things some people have, you might choose to have more, less or any combination that best meets your personal situation depending largely on who will be using the kit.

• A bag or case to put most of the things in. It makes sense to have everything in one bag as that means you can just reach for the bag, pull out what is needed, and start using them, rather than looking through different shelves, cupboards and so on.
• First aid manual. Even if you are trained it is a good reminder on what to do in case you are rusty, for many people that have no training this is how they know what to do for less frequent first aid needs.
• Antihistamine for minor allergic reactions.
• For lubrication.
• For those with life-threatening allergies.
• For itching, insect bites, poison ivy and such.
• Gauzes, tape, plasters and bandages of different sizes and shapes.
• For taking out splinters, ticks and such.
• Syringe or spoon for medications.
• Keep in the a first aid bag a small torch with spare batteries.
• Antibiotic cream for certain kinds of cuts and scrapes.
• Emergency phone numbers.
• Painkillers for fever and pain control. Have them in forms for everyone and have different types. For example, you can take pills fine but you might have a five year old who won’t.
• Digital thermometer.
• Alcohol pads to clean wounds.
• Small scissors to cut gauze and tape and such.
• Safety pins for holding bandages together for example.
• Baby wipes for general cleaning needs.
• Distilled water for cleaning wounds and rinsing out eyes.
• Sterile eye dressing in case the eye is injured or something gets in it.
• Disposable sterile gloves.
• Spray or cream to treat insect stings and bites.
• Insect repellant to prevent the above!
• Another thing to keep in a first aid pack is sunscreen.
• Antiseptic cream.
• Tissues for snotty noses and more.
• Skin rash cream like hydrocortisone.
• Decongestant sprays or tablets.
• Antacids for heartburn and indigestion.
• Cough medications and throat lozenges.
• Antibacterial hand sanitizer so you can clean hands without water.
• Anti-diarrhea medications just in case.
• Ice packs, you can get the instant type nowadays.
• Adhesive sutures, closures, steri-strips.
• Cotton balls, swabs and tips.
• If you have a baby in your first aid bag it is good to include a nasal aspirator and teeth medication and nappy rash cream.

You might also put in personal medications if someone is on something for a chronic condition, for example, an asthma pump. Make it a kit that meets your needs.
